Chalk
Chalk is a desktop application for teachers that turns existing lesson plans, curriculum calendars, and classroom planning materials into a searchable AI-assisted planning workspace.
What Chalk does
- Lets users connect Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets with read-only access.
- Lets users choose which folders, documents, or spreadsheets Chalk may inspect.
- Downloads or exports selected Google Docs and Sheets content for local processing.
- Extracts reference material and teaching templates for lesson-plan generation.
- Creates local search/index data, including vector search data when AI embeddings are enabled.
- Does not upload, modify, delete, or write back to Google Drive, Docs, or Sheets content.
Google data Chalk uses
Chalk currently requests Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets read-only permissions so users can browse selected Drive content and export selected Docs and Sheets for app features. Chalk uses this access only to provide document discovery, download/export, local processing, search, and AI-assisted planning features requested by the user.
AI provider processing
Chalk may send selected or extracted content to user-configured AI service providers, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or other API-based AI services the app may support in the future. Users choose which provider or API credentials to use when AI features require a third-party service. Those providers process submitted data under their own terms, privacy policies, and data-handling practices.
Raw document and spreadsheet contents remain locally stored in Chalk’s SQLite database, local file cache, and vector/search storage unless the user actively uses a feature that sends selected content or derived context to a configured AI provider for processing.
